From River Rafting to Destination Brand

The State of Tennessee knows it has a powerful adventure tourism region and economic engine with Ocoee River rafting. It wanted to elevate visibility and increase visitorship to the region to support its highly competitive outfitters and related tourism businesses. We knew that destination branding around the Ocoee River Corridor with a powerful, multi-year southeastern marketing campaign was the answer.

CLIENT CHALLENGE

Turning America’s Favorite River Into a Must-Visit Adventure Tourism Destination that Appeals to Many Different Audiences

Following short term campaigns in 2021-2022 designed to promote tourism to the area after the initial outbreaks of Covid-19, the State of Tennessee sought a more strategic and enduring marketing program for the Ocoee River. Liquid Spark won the three year marketing contract for 2023-2026 in a competitive RFP process that included 11 total agencies from across the USA and Canada. Our winning proposal centered on developing a strong destination brand for the region with multi-channel campaigns promoting both whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River, the cornerstone of this area, and secondarily, multi-day getaways with exceptional related adventure activities for all ages. We developed a cohesive destination brand from the ground up, including a fresh branding package that leveraged the existing Ocoee River State Park identity, a dedicated destination website, highly targeted digital ad campaigns, new social media channels and positioning, and a library of fresh content including a Corridor-wide film shoot. All this was done in close collaboration with the local outfitters and governmental agencies. The result is an ongoing, region-specific marketing platform designed to outlast seasonal pushes and unify the Ocoee as a must-visit outdoor adventure destination in the Southeast.

Developed a Custom Multi-influencer Campaign

We amplified reach, generated authentic content, and connected new traveler audiences with the Ocoee’s story through trusted ambassadors.

THE RESULTS

A New Look & Feel

Reversed a Multi-Year Decline in Rafting Numbers

Arrested year-over-year continued declines in Ocoee river rafting commercial numbers by end of 2024. This is compared to 8-15% decreases in visitation reported for other rafting rivers across the USA.

Launched Brand New Destination Website

The new website we launched saw 4X more traffic sessions and 5.3X more pageviews than the previous Covid time based website, in its first full season of results.

Promoted the Ocoee to Millions of Potential Visitors in the South East

Digital ads generated 13.7M impressions in Atlanta, Nashville, and drive-to regions. And that was only 1 component of our integrated marketing rollout.

High-Impact Organic Growth Across Social

TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook content reached over 1.39 million viewers—entirely organically. This also resulted in a 778% increase in engaged sessions on the website from social media traffic.

Out-of-Home Campaign Delivered Big in Atlanta

The first digital billboards, updated monthly with new creative, earned 9.1M impressions, capturing key drive audiences in the Atlanta market.

Built a Rich Visual Asset Library From the Ground Up

Multi-day film shoots produced cohesive, on-brand imagery used across web, social, programmatic ads, and PR—capturing the full spirit of the Ocoee region and new angles of the Ocoee River rafting experience. And TN Tourism picked up our footage for their 2024 TN Sounds Perfect Campaign!
